Consulting is a good option for people with a technical or professional background.  Every professional person has unique talent and information that could be used to generate an income.  Many times, all it takes is a business card and letterhead paper to start a consulting business, expecially if a person already has contacts in a particular field.  Send a letter or e-mail to all your contacts and offer your service as a consultant or contractor.  

Becoming a trainer is an option that many people don’t think about.  Every technical profession has a need for trainers.  It may be necessary to re-write your resume to emphasize training on a specific subject or area, but utilizing your experience, training and education as a trainer is an excellent way to generate extra money while still leaving you in charge of your life.

Become a professional vendor at a flea market.  Many people make a fairly good income selling things at flea markets.   Rather than try to sell a wide variety of items, choose what you want to sell based on a hobby or interest. This means you’ll already have good product knowledge and, more importantly, you may be passionate about what you are doing.

Start a handyman business.  Almost every homeowner knows how to fix things and many people who have full time jobs, don’t have the time to fix things.  Starting this type of business could be as easy as advertising in the local paper, posting notices on bulletin boards or word of mouth by your friends and neighbors.  Think about all the times you put off making a repair because you did not have the time.  The possibilities are endless.

Start an online business or online store.  This is my personal favorite, simply because I like working on the internet.  The internet has created unlimited opportunities to make money.  But, it is not easy.  There is a tremendous amount of material to learn and most people who try to make money online will fail because they don’t take the time to learn how to build an online business.  Many people fall prey to the hype of instant riches and give up before they have time to be successful.  Some will fail because they are looking for a job and not a business.

There are several types of online job possibilities.  Proofreading comes to mind.  Everything that is printed needs to have someone proofread it.  This does require a good command of the English language and punctuation though.  Other possibilities for online jobs are data entry, filling out surveys, online research or online clerical work.

As with anything on the internet, it pays to do your homework and research any business or online job opportunity to avoid being the victim of a scam.  When you find something of interest, do a complaint search for the company or person you will be doing business with and find out what other people are saying.  Read the forums and get as much information as you can to make an informed decision.  After all, it is your future you are working with and you want it to be successful.
